When partner opens 1 /1 remember that new suits are forcing,
requiring
partner to bid again, and raising partner or bidding notrump is not
forcing. These are your general strategies for what to bid...
0-6 HCP - Pass!
6-9 HCP - Raise partner w/ support for partners suit, or bid 1N w/o
support
for their suit.
10-12 HCP - Jump raise partner w/ 4+ card support, bid a new suit at
the two
level, or bid 2N when balanced w/o support. (unless you are playing Jacoby 2N.)
12+ HCP - With support for partner start by bidding a new suit at the
two
level and then jump raise partners suit.
Example of basic bidding if Partner opens 1 (bidding is similar if partner
opens 1 )
1N = 6-9 HCP, 0-2
2 = 5+ ,
10+ HCP
2 = 5+ ,
10+ HCP
2 = 5+ ,
10+ HCP
2 = 3-4 ,
6-9 HCP
2N = ??? 10-12 HCP, 0-2 (Unless
you play Jacoby 2N) ???
3 = ??? Jump Shift (Strong or Weak
- can be played either way) ???
3 = ??? Jump Shift (Strong or Weak

3 = 4 ,
10-12 HCP
3N = 13-15 HCP, 0-2
4 *= ??? 4+ , 11-14 HCP, Singleton or Void in , Splinter
4 *= ??? 4+ , 11-14HCP, Singleton or Void in , Splinter
4 *= ??? 4+ , 11-14 HCP, Singleton or Void in , Splinter
4 = 5+ , 5-10 HCP, no slam interest
4N = Blackwood (Asks partner for aces - could be Keycard.)
<>Other conventions are commonly played in response to partner's
major suit
opening, these must be discussed with partner before you play: (common
conventional bids are marked ??? above.)
1N Forcing - When partner opens 1 /1 and you
bid 1N it is artificial and
forcing for one round. This shows 6+ HCP, but is unlimited. Opener is
required to bid again and further describe their hand. Responder will
then be
in a good position to describe their hand.
Jacoby 2N - A bid of 2N in response to a
major suit opening shows, 4+ card
support for openers major, 12+ HCP and is forcing to game. It asks the
opener
if they have a singleton or void and it is a useful convention for
investigating slam
without using Blackwood and bidding beyond game. > |
