Contract: 3N by N

This is a typical notrump auction. After partner opens 1N you transfer to show 5-Ss. Then when you rebid 2N you show 8-9 HCP. These leaves partner in a good position to place the final contract in any of 2N, 3S, 3N, or 4S.

Contract: 4S by E

This is another standard notrump auction. East opens 1N showing 15-17 HCP and West shows 5-Ss and at least 10 HCP. East is left to place the contract: 3N or 4S.

The play will be relatively simple. Count losers from the West hand. There is one loser in each suit. In order to get rid of one of the losers we will take the simple play of ruffing one of the clubs in the east hand. Play KS, AS, AC, KC, C ruffed in dummy. If all works out, you will lose one S, H, and D. Making 4S!

What happens if you get a bad break and lose two S tricks? Can you get rid of another of your losers? (Hint: Can you setup East's Ds to get rid of your H loser?)
